Why do I Procrastinate?

Procrastination.

What’s your response to that word? Shame? Guilt? Judged?

Interestingly as I was pondering all of the thoughts we frequently have around procrastination, I realized there is a lot negativity and judgment.

We place a lot of qualitatively punitive language around this word and concept.

We make procrastination some sort of factor in our net worth.

When we look at our own procrastination, we use phrases like “I am lazy” or “I’ll figure that out later…”

My friends, those phrases are lies.

You are not lazy.

Procrastination is most commonly a symptom of burnout and or anxiety.

We procrastinate when something else in our system is off.

It might be an unconscious admission that we are unclear how to proceed to accomplish the task.

Or it could also be an involuntary stress response that forces us to rest.

Whatever it is, it almost certainly is not a case of a person just choosing to be unproductive.

So today, in keeping with my theme of productivity for the month of August, I am going to lead a more neutral discussion on procrastination.

Today we will talk about:

  • What procrastination actually is

  • What is our brain trying to to tell us when we are chronically procrastinating

  • Ways you can reduce your tendency to procrastinate
