Why do we buy what we buy? Exploring the brain science behind consumerism with Maria Platusic

Have you ever wondered why you buy the things you buy?

I mean sometimes, you buy certain things simply due to lack of choice or because it fills a very immediate need.

But often, we have options and time to think about it.

So how do we choose from the veritable sea of options available to us?

Maria Platusic is a brand marketing expert with expertise in the science of design and branding and today we are going to discuss the brain science of branding and design.

You know those ubiquitous golden arches that seem to be on the corner of every other block in the city and your kids ALWAYS want you to stop at?

What if I told you there is very intentional brain science behind the color scheme for that brand?

Yellow is proven to create the emotion most commonly associated with joy in the brain and Red is shown to trigger your appetite response.

Those golden arches are quite literally scientifically calibrated to make you happy and hungry so you are more likely to come grab a burger or some fries.

Another example is the color blue.

It is known to trigger feelings of dependability and you can see prolific use of the color blue in popular brands such as in the credit card, computing or car industries.

Understanding some of the science of branding can help you not only to break the rules and make your brand stand out but also make sure you are a more informed consumer.
